Journal of Plants 02

Watering is the most basic & important task in the nurturing of potted plants. Through watering, you are daily showering your plants with love.

Potted plants ordinarily are mot watered until the topsoil is dry. When watering them, the water is sprinkled until all of the soil is evenly moistened. First go around watering them lightly so that water does not overflow from the topsoil; then make a second, third, & fourth round in the same manner. This method may seem tedious but it will save water & time in the end, & let the water go to the deeper roots. To do so you need a good watering can that has minute spray holes that produce a very fine & gentle shower.

Above is a shortlist of my watering tools. They got watering cans, sprayers, & so on. Sizes vary from 9 liter to 800 ml. I use different ones for different plants & trees, & different usage.

Copper, a material prized for its unsurpassed responsiveness to heat for cookware. However, not many people know a good watering can should be made of copper too. It has been proven that by spraying with a copper watering can the trace of copper ions that seep into the water will aid the growth of moss on your plants.

There are a lot of choices of copper watering cans out there. When I choose one in the market I pick one that produce fine & gentle water stream & comes with changeable nozzles. The photo is a Masakuni's, said to be the originator of the bonsai tools & has over 70 years of experience & history. Maybe I should talk about my bonsai tools next time!

By the way, there could be no better treat for your loved plants at the end of a hot summer day than water sprayed on the leaves from above, which will help them recover from heat stress!

Happy gardening!
